Community Spotlight

Welcome to common-woman. You may remember an earlier story on common-woman about the Johansen family and their adventures. Nick and Kathy encourage the kids to use their creative talents. As a family, they enjoy working together to build and design local art. Here, they prepare for Christmas, and give back to the community.

Nurse Kathy (mom) continues to care for patients at a local hospital. She loves horses. Kathy enjoys growing flowers and her garden each year. (Note the petunias in the tractor tire with Nick’s horseshoe angel). Her energy and talents encourage all in the family!

Sidney (sister) keeps busy with school, her after school job, family, and designing 2021 calendars. Two calendar styles are available; one with pictures of farm animals and one that features nature shots. Both are beautiful!

You may recognize the November turkey as the star (sort of ) of the earlier Johansen turkey tale.

Nick (dad) works as an animal feed specialist. He also is a farrier (shoes horses), big rig

driver, carpenter, designer and a skilled welder. Here are some of his amazing creations designed with horseshoes.

a. b.

a. One of Nick’s horseshoe angels. He customizes colors and designs. His creativity is only limited by customer requests, horseshoes and his welder.

b. Holes are drilled in each horseshoe for hanging decorations.

Kody and Austin (the brothers) built 10 bird houses in one day! On December 5, Nick

oversaw the project, and then turned these guys loose to build the bird houses. By 5:00 pm, they had the 10 completely finished. They donated their time and labor to building these for Grains For Hope. The bird boxes will be decorated and placed around Brown and Nemaha County to share free hand sanitizer and free face coverings. In the spring, the bird boxes will be returned to their original purpose: Nesting boxes for birds!

There you have it! A December update with the Johansen family! Many thanks to Nick, Kathy, Sidney, Kody and Austin for letting us look over their shoulders into their busy lives.

Check out more of Nick’s designs on Facebook. Horseshoes in the hands of a master craftsman turn into amazing works of art. These are only a few of Nick’s horseshoe creations. Also on Facebook, investigate Sidney’s 2021 calendars!

Thanks, Austin and Kody! Grains For Hope is grateful to you for sharing your time and talents. Thanks for these awesome bird boxes!

Grains For Hope is expanding throughout Nemaha and Brown counties in Kansas. Grains For Hope is a 501 c-3 non-profit that is dedicated to supporting and encouraging local teens with their ideas and projects.
