Grackles

Recently, we have been graced with grackles at our house. Curious, I thought to look up some information about them. I knew that they are not always welcome, even before I checked with allaboutbirds. Then I looked at the subheadings. Clearly, grackles are on the pesky and pest lists.

People also ask

  1. Are grackles good for anything?

  2. Are grackles a problem?

  3. What does it mean when you see grackles?

  4. How do I get rid of grackles?

  5. What are grackles eating in my yard?

  6. Are grackles good for your yard?

In spite of their unpopularity, I confess to being amused by a certain grackle who marches around our yard. Sassy and impertinent, he keeps a sharp eye out for irregularities and crumbs.

The other evening, I was shelling peas at the picnic table. This fellow flew down to a lower cedar limb to check on the progress. He has those piecing eyes. I offered him a pea pod, but he flew away in disgust. He stalked over to the gooseberry bush and found a tidbit, swallowed it and returned to the cedar branch to watch. I finished with the peas and went inside. The grackle flew away.

The next morning, he was back at his task of yard surveillance. Blissfully unaware that he is low on the list of beloved birds, his ego remains intact. It seems safe to say that in the foreseeable future, he plans to stay right here, managing things in our his yard.
