Memorial Day is for those who gave their lives for us to live in freedom. In 1955, then President Eisenhower signed the order for Memorial Day to be recognized by Americans for brave men and women who died for their country.
Born in Texas and raised in Kansas, Eisenhower grew up appreciating the family farms. He understood the discipline and hard work that are poured into the lives of those working in rural settings.
Along with honoring the fallen Americans, Eisenhower recognized the value of the rural populations. In this statement, the precious gift of agriculture is captured in his wise words:
“Agriculture is more than an industry; it is a way of life. Throughout our history, the family farm has given strength and vitality to our entire social order.” ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower, January 9, 1956
The farms today look different, but the work to make a living with the family on the farm requires the same commitment and dedication.
During this current planting season, let us offer prayers for the farmers and farm families who work together to bring food to our tables. Prayers for timely rains and sunshine; healthy livestock and good markets. Their time, money and sweat equity are poured into the hope for the harvests next fall.
Farmers are heroes; every one of them.
Eisenhower said it so long ago, “…the family farm has given strength and vitality to our entire social order.” These words are just as true today. Thank you, Farmers.
