Parents' Day

The young son of good friends recently enjoyed a special birthday. The wise parents asked

him to make a list of what he was hoping for on his special day. After talking it over, they decided what wishes they could help come true on his birthday.

This same week, another wonderful family had a daughter who celebrated her special birthday. They, too, had a discussion about what would make her birthday be the best!

Together, they reached a decision about what would be possible to do for a memorable, happy celebration.

A preschooler was preparing to enjoy a sleep-over at a relative’s home. The child was allowed to choose the clothing, toys and books to bring along for the big occasion. Proud and happy, the child chose an original outfit that made the sleep-over the best ever.

These are 3 examples of awesome parents giving their children opportunities to participate fully in their lives. Special events, ordinary times, happy moments spent together, hard decisions, careful discipline, unexpected opportunities, new adventures. . . all are part of the tough job called parenting.

Parents: you are recognized and appreciated. Thank you for raising your children today in 2022 with so much love and care.

This poem by Helen Steiner Rice was on one of the cards we received at our wedding 49 years ago. Today it is shared in honor of parents.

“Love is like magic and it always will be. For Love still remains life’s sweet mystery! Love works in ways that are wondrous and strange and there’s nothing in life that Love cannot change! Love can transform the most commonplace into beauty and splendor and sweetness and grace. Love is unselfish and kind, for it sees with its heart and not with its mind. Love is the answer that everyone seeks… Love is the language that every heart speaks. Love can’t be bought; it is priceless and free. Love, like pure magic, is life’s sweet mystery.” – Helen Steiner Rice
