I like everything about avocados: the green fruit, the flavor and the color. And, those great big avocado seeds are fun to grow. Growing an avocado plant depends on the seed putting down roots. Long before the leaves appear, the roots begin.
Families and friends connect and grow a little bit like plants. I was reminded of this recently when I ran into three cousins in the produce section of the grocery store—right beside the pile of avocados!
Family news, updates and memories were shared. The family tree has literally spread into a family garden.
Driving home, I thought about renewal, mobility and connections. My cousins and I reconnected through a conversation at the grocery store. It was a great present!
Having deep roots in family, friends and a home place gives us a better picture of ourselves. We are able to see the special person God designed each of us to be. Like an avocado seed, first our roots develop through faith and trust; then our leaves sprout and spread. In a similar way, God helps us first put down roots, grow leaves, then finally bear and share the fruits of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-26.
The next time you enjoy guacamole-or before-think of someone you love and miss. Reach out to them and renew your roots together. Share a little time. Email, text, call, talk face to face. . . whatever works for a quick conversation. And then maybe plant that avocado seed.
