“Sowing seeds of kindness. . .” *
Fields, orchards, gardens and flower beds, pastures and pollinator/wildlife areas are growing fast. The summer sun and recent rains encourage the trees and plants to bear fruit. This got me thinking. Without those people who sow the grains, vegetables, fruits and flowers, such an abundance would be impossible. Many thanks to those who raise food for local, regional, national and international tables. You are appreciated.
A few nights ago, a vehicle drove into our lane. The doors flew open and a boy and a girl jumped out. Each had something in hand as they ran to our door.
“This is for you!” One handed me a Tupperware container with two slices of hot cherry pie.
“And this goes with it!” Our other young friend placed a second Tupperware container filled with vanilla ice cream in my other hand.
“We wondered if it would be too late and you would be ready for bed,” their mom smiled as she walked around the front of their vehicle.
“Nope, midnight is good for bed,” I replied. “And it is never too late for fresh cherry pie and ice cream!”
We visited for a few minutes, then the family drove off to enjoy their own cherry pie and ice cream, along with the rest of their family.
Once back inside the house, David and I marveled at the joy of good neighbors and friends, and such a grand surprise.
Of course, the pie and ice cream were delicious. We loved every bite!
That night, I thought about what such a generous gift involved. The parents are sowing seeds by:
Sharing their delicious surprise with neighbors
Delivering the pie meant extra effort and an extra evening trip to our house
Bringing the pie and ice cream in Tupperware containers indicates trust they will be returned
Modeling generosity by parents (this is not the first treat we have enjoyed from this family!)
Working together to pick and pit the cherries and to make and bake the pie
Recognizing the abundance of the Sower who created the plants, animals and people
There are many good folks who enrich our lives. Thanks to the people of all ages who care about others and encourage through thoughts, words and deeds. Every person makes a difference. You make a positive difference. You are appreciated. Your kindness makes this world a better place.
Thank you for being you.
And thank you to the Master Sower who sowed those seeds in the first place.
Mark 4:3
“The sower went out and sowed the seed.”
