(Thanksgiving, 1935. Doris Lee, Oil on canvas)
This picture painted by Doris Lee around 1933 depicts a traditional (at the time) representation for some people of Thanksgiving. It's a really busy picture with people involved in the preparation for a bountiful meal.
Times have changed. Expectations have changed. Kitchens have changed.
In 2019, people may choose to enjoy their own version of a bountiful meal served on November 28, or perhaps on another day:
Tacos instead of turkey may be the featured main food attraction. Filling paper plates with snacks and treats and then moving into a room to sit on the floor works for some meals. Some folks sit down at a long table and pass bowls and plates of food. Kale and hummus and may be enjoyed. Fasting may be a choice. Others travel to a meal site and enjoy talking and eating with a whole bunch of people they may or may not know very well.
Whatever the traditions or choices you choose for your own Thanksgiving, please take a moment to be grateful for your own life and your own value. Love yourself exactly as you are at this moment. Thank you for being part of this world.
The following poem is in tribute to The Lady in the Garden
Autumn in the Garden
I walked down through the garden
This fine autumnal day
To see the autumn's flowers
Waiting there on display.
The chrysanthemums were blooming
In fullest beauty there
In rust and golden blossoms;
And on the crispy air
There was a hint of roses,
I looked a while and, lo!
A rose or two still lingered
As summer's overflow!
I walked down through the garden
This fine autumnal day
To see the last of summer
And autumn on display!
