Yesterday morning, my brother and his dog Missy came to the kitchen door to share a pile of cherry tomatoes. As the picture shows, the tomatoes were perfectly red and ripe. After a nice conversation, my brother and Missy drove away.
Thanks to this gift, cherry tomato sauce became a reality.
I thought of Deuteronomy 8:10
And you shall eat and be full, and shall bless the Lord your God for the good land He had given you.
This brought to mind the poem “Prayer” by Mary Oliver.
She speaks of expressing gratefulness in the small things. Mary Oliver encourages writing our own expressions of gratitude. It’s not a contest, she reminds the reader.
“Prayer”
“It doesn’t have to be the blue iris, it could be weeds in a vacant lot, or a few small stones; just pay attention, then patch a few words together and don’t try to make them elaborate, this isn’t a contest but the doorway into thanks, and a silence in which another voice may speak.” -Mary Oliver
So in response to Mary Oliver’s encouragement, here’s a little tribute to cherry tomato sauce.
Cherry Tomatoes.
Small red wonders
Gather
To make sauce
Boil. Simmer. Soften.
Press through the sieve;
Wooden pestle urges
Sauce
No longer many-
But together;
One
Tomato sauce.
