What A Week!

RECAP

Monday – The joy of a haircut! For the first time since Christmas, 2019, I have my hair done. The stylist and I wear facemasks and practice social distancing in the freshly sanitized salon. She transforms a wild mop of hair into a manageable length and style. I am grateful.

Tuesday – We are rebuilding an old shed. With a list of goals to accomplish today, we prepare to move some of the pieces of reusable wood stacked on the floor. Grabbing a giant roll of insulation and heading out the door, I trip over a concrete block we had neglected to move. My knees hit the concrete floor. Especially the left one. Exquisite pain. I understand that description now. It hurts. My left knee is intact. I am grateful.

Wednesday afternoon – Today, I am Chester to Matt Dillion. Stiff-legged and slow, I help Shane erect a windmill. It is pure pleasure to watch the crane balance the 40-foot tower over the metal legs set in concrete. The crane operator is a master with the huge machine. Shane checks the tower with a level. On the first try, the bubble is exactly in the middle. I hand equipment, tools, washers, nuts and bolts to Shane as he clamps and drills and tightens. A couple of trips up and down the tower. Shane dumps oil into the gearbox and releases the brake. The tail unfurls in the wind and the head begins to spin.

Success. I am grateful.

ThursdayToday was tense and anxious. I have noticed over the past few weeks of sheltering that Thursdays have been the toughest. Harsh words, grumbling and a domestic disagreement flare-over what? Honey Wheat Chex, for goodness sake! I misunderstood what David meant and I was mad. His leg is hurting. My knee hurts. As I walk out to the kitchen, I see something move on the dining room floor. It is a snake. I herd the snake into an empty cracker box and carry it outside. The indignant snake strikes menacingly and harmlessly inside the box.  I dump the snake onto the grass. He slithers away. I walk back into the kitchen. I bring David’s supper to his office. He smiles. I am grateful.

Friday – Last night, my body recalibrated in honor of my sore knees. This morning, things seem better. Today, I will rework a recipe for Peanut Butter Bars made from stale doughnuts. I learned this trick when we lived in Branson and I worked at the Hollister Country Mart. The locals and the tourists loved this sweet treat. I will share the recipe next week on common-woman. That job taught me many things. I am grateful.

Enjoy this Memorial Day Weekend. Be safe, take good care. Thank you for sharing in common-woman.
