Although I had not before heard of an official “world smile day”, October 7 seems to be the chosen date.
“Smiles” reminds me of an old Dutch Masters cigar commercial from the 1960’s. Here is a very grainy copy of the singing commercial that I remember as a little girl. Only slightly off key, I would sing this song while playing outside under the big maple tree.
My great-grandpa smoked White Owl cigars.
Although the White Owl cigar box was eye-catching with the imposing white owl gazing from the lid, there was no catchy song. I did learn something about a suspicious voice inflection about “us” against “them”.
And then there was that exotic and mysterious tiparillo cigar. The beautiful woman carrying the box of “cigars, cigarettes, tiparillos” around a fancy night club was mesmerizing to this little girl from rural Kansas. I was caught up in the glamorous scene. I worried my mother for several months, while walking around the house carrying an old Buster Brown shoebox repeating in what I reckoned to be a sophisticated, husky voice, “cigars, cigarettes, tiparillos”.
The Lucky Strike cigarette commercials were of some interest as well. That was the brand my daddy smoked during my early life. LSMFT – Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco.
How we arrived here from World Smile Day is something of a circuitous route. Common-woman hopes that you enjoy a day filled with songs and smiles on this October 7, 2022!
